Parents: Father, Leo Enjolras, d. 1831 of influenza. After his father's death, Chrétien was responsible for his mother, Sylvie, and, as the man of the family, was also in charge of the funds. He was unable or unwilling to leave his studies, so she stayed on at the family estate, widowed at 37. Unfortunately, one day in April, 1832, she was travelling to attend to business and her horse lost its shoe and fell, crushing one of her legs beneath. The doctors did all they could to save it, and her, but it was lost to gangrene, and though it was amputated, the illness spread and she died shortly afterward. The loss destroyed her son.
